In what some are calling a $2.6 billion prestige play, China's big fish Wanda is swallowing AMC to create the world's largest theater chain despite the steady decline in the US industry.

In the largest single Chinese investment in a US business to date, a Chinese real?estate and entertainment conglomerate called Dalian Wanda Group has just purchased AMC, the second-largest?US movie theater chain with more than 5,000 screens in the US and Canada.
The $2.6 billion purchase, which makes Wanda the world?s largest theater chain owner with nearly 5,800 screens and more cinema-chain purchases under consideration, has many wondering it will mean for moviegoers.
?It offers a lot of possibilities,? says Paul Dergarabedian, box office analyst for Hollywood.com, of the acquisition of Kansas City-based AMC, which was a year in the making.
?This transaction will help make Wanda a truly global cinema owner, with theaters and technology that enhance the movie-going experience for audiences in the world?s two largest markets," said Wang Jianlin, Wanda's chairman and president, in the Los Angeles Times.
?They intend to put a lot?of money into expansion and improvements,? says Dergarabedian, some $500 million according to the company?s statements.
The purchase, he says, shows a lot of confidence in the theatrical sector:??You don?t put that kind of money into something that is not relevant.?
This commitment could show up in such items as more reserved seating and higher-quality or more varied concession items. ?Maybe even some different kinds of food,? adds Dergarabedian with a laugh, ?although I?m sure they will always sell popcorn,?who knows if?some of their own?treats might be a big seller.?
Don?t?look for?these?amenities in every market, however,?says Steve Herz,?an?entertainment attorney and founder of IF Management, a talent agency in Manhattan.
?I think they will in specific markets,? he says via email, mentioning New York and Los Angeles. But only if the?economics make sense, he adds, with sufficient ?consumer demand and willingness to spend $25 on a movie ticket or more.?
Some experts cautiously suggest this?deal could?create more openness in a?relationship historically marred by?conflicts?over?Chinese censorship and piracy of US films.
Indeed, eyeing the potential of the vast Chinese marketplace, Hollywood is moving ahead full steam, points out Dergarabedian.?This deal comes on the heels of?several?recent moves. According to the Los Angeles Times, Chinese film distributor Bona Film Group announced it had agreed to sell News Corp. a roughly 20 percent stake.
Nordic walking improves health of heart failure patientsPublic release date: 21-May-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Nordic walking enables heart failure patients to exercise more intensely than walking without poles.
The research was presented at the Heart Failure Congress 2012, 19-22 May, in Belgrade, Serbia. The Congress is the main annual meeting of the Heart Failure Association of the European Society of Cardiology.
Aerobic exercise in patients with heart failure improves quality of life and reduces heart failure related hospitalisations. However, many heart failure patients find it difficult to exercise. In Nordic walking, people use poles and their arms copy the motions of cross country skiing. It is one of the fastest developing forms of physical activity in Europe and is safe for older patients, especially those above the age of 65, making it a good possibility for patients with heart failure.
For the study (abstract P939)
12 patients with heart failure and 12 healthy adults did two submaximal six-minute walking tests on a level treadmill at a constant speed of 5km per hour. Participants did one test with Nordic walking poles and one without.
The researchers compared the cardiorespiratory responses during walking with and without poles. In the healthy group, compared to walking without poles Nordic walking increased oxygen consumption (VO2) by 4.9 ml/kg/minute (a median increase of 37%) and led to a higher respiratory quotient (median increase of 5%). Peak heart rate was 20 beats per minute higher, maximal systolic blood pressure (BP) was 15 mmHg higher, and fatigue level was increased by 2 points on the Borg Scale. All results were significant (p=0.05).
In patients with heart failure, compared to walking without poles Nordic walking increased VO2 by 2.9 ml/kg/minute (14.7%) and respiratory quotient by 18%. Peak heart rate was 15 beats per minute higher, maximal BP was 10 mmHg higher, and fatigue level was increased by 2 points. All results were significant (p=0.05).
In both the healthy group and patients with heart failure, there were no signs of cardiac ischaemia and no significant arrhythmias during the tests.
The researchers concluded that Nordic walking allows healthy people and patients with heart failure to safely increase the intensity of exercise and gain additional cardiorespiratory benefits from exercise.
"In Nordic walking we have a big workload because we use additional muscle groups," says lead author Andrzej Lejczak, a physiotherapist at the Military Hospital in Wroclaw, Poland, and a PhD student at the University School of Physical Education in Wroc?aw. "We walk with four limbs, so we're exercising our arms and legs at the same time - that's why we have such a beneficial response."
He adds: "The implication is that Nordic walking is safe to include in cardiac rehabilitation programmes for patients with heart failure."
Patients simply need to purchase Nordic walking poles, which cost about 50, then take two or three one-hour lessons. After that they can exercise on their own outdoors, without needing to visit the gym.
Previous studies by Mr Lejczak have shown that Nordic walking improves quality of life, aerobic capacity and physical fitness in heart failure patients.

DETROIT?? Three young men were arraigned Sunday in the assault and carjacking of popular Detroit pastor and gospel singing icon Marvin Winans.
The office of Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy identified the suspects as Detroit residents Montoya Givens and Christopher Moorehead, both 20, and Brian K. Young, 18, of Macomb County's Clinton Township. They are charged with carjacking, unarmed robbery and conspiracy, said Maria Miller, Worthy's spokeswoman.
The charges carry up to life in prison.
The men appeared in Detroit's 36th District Court and were ordered held on $200,000 bonds. Their preliminary examinations, in which a judge decides where there's enough evidence for the case to go to trial, are June 1.
A prosecutor's spokeswoman said Sunday she didn't think the defendants had lawyers yet.
Winans, 54, was attacked Wednesday afternoon while pumping gas in Detroit. The robbers took his sport utility vehicle, Rolex watch, cash and credit cards.
Worthy said she was pleased with the closing of the case but added a dig at the effectiveness of Detroit police. She said she was "buoyed by the fact that this case was well investigated by the police and that we were able to charge this case quickly. However, with the proper resources this could be done in all cases."
Chief Ralph Godbee said last week that he was proud of the quick work his officers did in making arrests and said crime in the city has been about steady, despite a number of high-profile cases. "We're doing all we can with the resources we have," he told The Detroit News.
A message seeking comment was left with Detroit police Sunday.
Winans sustained bruises and scrapes and was treated at a hospital and released. He is pastor of the 4,500-member Perfecting Church and delivered singer Whitney Houston's eulogy in February.
"I'm just saddened that it has come to this," Winans said shortly after the attack. "This kind of nonsense just has to stop. It's just the savageness of what's happening in the street."

He continued with that message Sunday, as his congregants welcomed him with cheers and applause.
Recalling what he said to a woman who gave him a ride to his church after the attack, Winans said he told her, "I'm just sad ... to think we have reared young men to prey ? P-R-E-Y ? on people that they think are weaker."
Winans told reporters before the service that he believes Detroit can be turned around.
"The city is fixable, and it starts with the men of the city, in particular the black men," he said. "And I ... want to urge all of you men who hear me to go and get your sons. I'm not bitter. I'm not upset. I'm saddened by what has taken place. But I'm also inspired. We have to make a change in this city."

We learned last week that a trader at JPMorgan Chase played a game of high-stakes poker and lost. Badly. To the tune of $2 billion ? or possibly $3 billion. And the good news is that even though that?s a staggering sum to you or me, it isn?t enough to put the firm in any jeopardy.
But I come praise bankers, not to bury them. I?m not suggesting that the nation is well served by letting every swaggering dipstick with a finance degree ?gamble with billions in other people?s money ? ?which may well be the status quo. But there?s much to be said for taking risks. Nothing says it better than a look at the opposite end of the spectrum ? the obsessively risk-averse ? as exemplified by most nonprofits.
In the past year, a nonprofit that desperately wants to increase its fundraising balked at the idea of hiring a part-time person to handle the load of a bulked-up fundraising effort. Why? Because there was no money in the budget. ?True. But it takes a very small leap of faith to imagine that a stepped-up fundraising drive could increase revenues at least enough to cover a part-time salary.
Perhaps there isn?t $400 in the budget to hire a mailhouse for mailing the quarterly newsletter. But is it so hard to imagine that the staff would do more for the organization if they weren?t sidetracked into the all-hands-on-deck emergency mailing drill?
Perhaps the budget does not include $1,000 for a professional graphic designer to handle the publication. On the other hand, is it hard to believe donors might be more generous if their first impression of the organization was not of an amateurish, seat-of-the-pants operation?
I?m not among those who believes that business has all the answers for nonprofits. On the other hand, business has some lessons that nonprofits would do well to learn, and one of them is this: taking a few careful, calculated risks is not only not a bad thing; it?s practically a requirement for success.
Nuance, of Dragon TV fame announced today that it was licensing Rovi's (formerly known as Macrovision) metadata for its talky-TV platform. Once integrated, the application will be able to marshall far more information than it currently can -- enabling it to give answers to queries like "Who plays Chuck on Gossip Girl?" That said, we're not holding out much hope that it'll be able to answer our question about which guy from CSI played that bad guy in that movie we can't remember the title of, or something.
The query of whenever a partnership is dedicated is often a source of much confusion and debate. cheap jerseys We reside inside a time once the marriage rate is really going down, the co-habitation rate is heading up, plus the majority of first-born kids are actually born to unmarried mother and father.
In this write-up I hope to shed some mild on this question to facilitate your perform with partners and individuals challenged by unique perceptions of the standing of their associations.
Commitment VS. Guarantee
I recently had a conversation having a lady who informed me she had just broken off a ?committed? partnership. A number of questions later on I learned that she had been dating this individual to get a 12 months, they were not residing collectively, cheap nfl jerseys and also the purpose she broke it off is the fact that he ?cheated.?
We discussed pre-committed vs. dedicated relationships, and she agreed that it was a pre-committed connection, but insisted which they had produced a ?commitment? to one another.
Ok, issues are receiving clearer. On the one hand will be the status from the relationship- pre-committed vs. committed, and alternatively are commitments made inside the partnership. Macro vs. micro. Two various issues, suitable
In our conversation, cheap nfl jerseys it occurred to me to create a distinction in between a ?Commitment? vs. a ?Promise.? They produced a promise to each other inside the context of the romantic relationship that was not dedicated. That distinction seemed to assist her make much more sensation of issues.
When I asked the RCI coaches for suggestions within the ?commitment vs. promise? distinction, most felt that it had been just semantics and there?s not substantially of the distinction. The common consensus was that any time you produce a promise you will be producing a dedication.
Nicely, I concur that it?s a query of semantics, and right here is my definition of phrases:
Guarantee: Verbally stated cheap jerseys long term intention to carry out a certain act.
- I guarantee to pick up your dry cleansing and not overlook this time ? I guarantee to become exclusive within our partnership
Commitment: Each a Reality shown by conduct, and an Attitude consisting of feelings and beliefs.
- I?m committed to retaining my guarantees ? I am dedicated to our romantic relationship
In brief, a guarantee is some thing you say, along with a dedication is something you do. A promise is situation-specific. A dedication is contextual.
A promise is often a little dedication. If a prospective companion does not maintain guarantees, I?d question their potential to keep commitments, as they are definitely related.
CONFUSION ABOUT Dedication
No matter whether or not you agree with my semantics, the distinction I made in between a dedication along with a guarantee was helpful to the over conversation.
The bigger picture even though, is the fact that I see loads of confusion in regards to the standing of modern cheap jerseys associations. Some years back when I coined the phrase ?pre-commitment? to illustrate partners that had been unique but not however committed, it was a valuable distinction, however the question remains- ?What is dedication?
Any time you are married, it is clear you happen to be inside a dedicated connection. Your dedication is really a lawful agreement as well as a publicly witnessed Truth. Even so, it truly is common for partners in difficulty for one particular or both partners to have an uncommitted Mindset.
I?ve talked with several unmarried folks, as the lady over, who?ve described on their own in ?committed associations.? They plainly possess the attitude, but typically have nothing at all but verbal promises (and from time to time not even that!) to exhibit that the romantic relationship is committed.
IN MY Opinion, You are -NOT- In a Dedicated Romantic relationship IF:
1. Your companion just isn?t conscious your partnership is committed
2. You are wondering if this relationship is dedicated
3. You as well as your companion have differences of viewpoint about the status of one?s romantic relationship
4. Your family and buddies have diverse perceptions about the standing of your romantic relationship
5. You as well as your partner haven?t acted to explicitly formalize your dedication in some way
6. That you are relying on verbal guarantees devoid of a substantial monitor record of them being stored
A commitment is explicit and unambiguous. A dedication is really a formal occasion of some type in between two people today. A commitment is some thing you DO more than time. An actual dedication is usually officially enforceable and you?ll find penalties for breaking it.
And, for a partnership to become absolutely dedicated, you will find no exits- mentally, emotionally, or physically. When the heading will get tough, you make it work.
CONTINUUM OF Dedication
Commitment is not a light change that goes from ?off? to ?on.? When developing a connection with an individual, the level of dedication progressively raises.
Then you?ve got all of the shades of gray. living collectively, dating solely for much more than a 12 months, even engaged to be married, that might appear and really feel like dedication, but could it be definitely
Reality VS. Frame of mind
Commitment inside a connection is complex in that it takes two people today, and it demands an alignment of Truth (occasions, steps) and Frame of mind (feelings, beliefs) for each of them.
It?s prevalent to become dedicated in actual fact (e.g. ?married?) but not in attitude (e.g. ?I?m not confident this can be the correct partnership for me?).
It is also typical to become pre-committed the truth is (e.g. dating solely) and dedicated in mindset (e.g. ?This is ?The One particular!? ?).
In my function with couples I?ve identified that probably the most crucial variable figuring out their future good results is their degree of dedication towards the relationship.
In my knowledge, when partners are committed in truth, although not in mindset, their prognosis is lousy.
Then, there are actually the pre-committed partners that normally fall into two categories-
UNCONSCIOUS- usually adhering to the ?mini-marriage? model of trying the romantic relationship out, acting committed with no really generating the dedication. A disconnect of reality and mindset.
CONSCIOUS- aware that they may be not however committed, ordinarily have commitment as a goal, asking their selves ?Is this the best relationship for me Should I make a dedication? An alignment of reality and frame of mind.
Conclusion
So, when is usually a romantic relationship committed
? When there?s an alignment of fact and frame of mind.
What generates the ?fact? of dedication
I suggest these 3 criterion:
Requirements #1: Promises produced to each other regarding the permanent character with the romantic relationship which can be kept
Standards #2: Explicit, formal, public declaration
Criteria #3: Unambiguous to partners and other individuals
In modern world, if all 3 with the above are met, I?d say it is actually a dedicated connection, irrespective of whether legally married or not.
I sincerely hope this post aids deal with the widespread concerns about dedication that arise in romantic relationship coaching. There are actually no pat solutions or prescriptions, but it is my hope that these ideas and concepts will allow you to have effective conversations together with your customers which can be caught inside the gray locations to assistance them to produce powerful relationship selections.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks rose more than 1 percent on Monday, with the S&P 500 snapping a six-day losing streak in a rebound from equities' biggest weekly drop in almost six months, but Facebook slumped in its second session after a disappointing debut.
Tech shares <.gspt> were among the day's biggest gainers, with an S&P sector index surging 2.8 percent on the strength of Apple Inc . Shares of Apple climbed 5.8 percent to $561.28, leading the Nasdaq to its biggest one-day percentage gain since December 2011.
Facebook Inc , the social networking giant that fell short of lofty expectations last week, fared no better on Monday. Facebook's stock sank 11 percent in its second day of trading, dropping to $34.03, well below its $38 issue price.
"Institutional buyers weren't as enamored with Facebook as retail investors were, so it isn't a surprise to see them taking their liquidity out for other areas," said John Norris, managing director of wealth management with Oakworth Capital Bank in Birmingham, Alabama.
Investors are watching the 1,300 to 1,290 range on the S&P 500 as a major support level, the lower end of which was tested last week after the benchmark index had fallen 7.8 percent since the end of April. The bottom of the range coincides with the S&P 500's 10-month moving average.
Sentiment improved after G8 leaders gave verbal backing for Greece to stay in the euro and stressed over the weekend that their "imperative is to promote growth and jobs." Greece is expected to hold elections after the country was unable to form a government following its most recent elections.
The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> jumped 135.10 points, or 1.09 percent, to 12,504.48 at the close. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> climbed 20.77 points, or 1.60 percent, to 1,315.99. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> rose 68.42 points, or 2.46 percent, to close at 2,847.21.
In another factor helping sentiment, China's premier called for additional efforts to support growth on Sunday, signaling Beijing's willingness to take action after a recent series of economic indicators suggested that the world's second-biggest economy will slow further in the second quarter.
"We've been in something of a near panic lately, and after so many down days, it was inevitable that we would bounce back, especially with news indicating that things aren't falling apart," Norris said.
Facebook shares were expected to face tough trading this week if lead underwriter Morgan Stanley stops supporting the stock and managers listed lower down in the IPO book, who were hoping for an early surge, decide to get out before going underwater.
Nasdaq OMX Group said it plans to implement procedures through which the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) will accommodate orders not executed in Facebook during the social media company's market debut on Friday. Nasdaq shares gained 3.6 percent to $22.78 after falling more than 4 percent on Friday.
In earnings news, Lowe's Cos Inc , the world's second-largest home improvement chain, cut its fiscal-year earnings outlook and said demand slowed toward the end of the traditionally strong first quarter. Lowe's stock slumped 10.1 percent to $25.60.
Yahoo shares rose 1 percent to $15.58 after news that Chinese Internet entrepreneur Jack Ma is buying back up to half of a 40 percent stake in his Alibaba Group from Yahoo for $7.1 billion in a deal that moves the Chinese e-commerce leader closer to a public listing.
About 83 percent of companies traded on the New York Stock Exchange closed in positive territory while on the Nasdaq, almost three-fourths of shares ended higher.
Volume was light, with about 6.77 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, the American Stock Exchange and Nasdaq, below last year's daily average of 7.84 billion.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman Mark Ellis was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday following emergency surgery to remove pressure on his left leg, and will remain hospitalized until the middle of next week.
He is expected to be out for at least six weeks.
"He was sent to the hospital, and testing showed elevated pressure in several compartments of the lower leg," Dodgers trainer Sue Falsone told reporters following the Dodgers' 6-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. "There was trauma to the area where everything kind of swells up, so you have to open up the fascia and basically release that pressure. They will keep an eye on it and most likely close that wound up on Tuesday."
Ellis, 34, is the fifth position player and fourth regular that manager Don Mattingly has lost in a span of 11 days.
He was injured during the seventh inning of Friday night's 6-5 Dodgers victory when he took a short toss from shortstop Dee Gordon on a fielder's choice grounder by Shane Robinson and was upended by Tyler Greene on a hard but clean straight-on takeout slide. The Dodgers already have center fielder Matt Kemp, third baseman Juan Uribe, left fielder Juan Rivera and utility infielder Jerry Hairston Jr. on the DL.
Ellis is batting .273 with two home runs and nine RBIs in 37 games with the Dodgers, who signed him as a free agent in November to a two-year, $8.75 million contract. The 11-year veteran had a fielding percentage of .900 or better in each of the previous seven seasons, and his .991 career mark entering this season was the second-best in history among second baseman behind Placido Polanco's .993 mark.
Infielder Ivan DeJesus was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque to fill Ellis' roster spot.

NEW YORK (AP) ? A blind Chinese legal activist who escaped house arrest, endured a nearly monthlong diplomatic tussle and a hurried daylong flight paused ever so briefly upon his arrival in New York City before taking up a familiar fight.
Taken from a hospital in his homeland and put on a plane for the U.S. after Chinese authorities suddenly told him Saturday to pack and prepare to leave, Chen Guangcheng embraced his new surroundings at New York University and renewed his call to fight injustice.
"I believe that no matter how difficult the environment nothing is impossible if you put your heart to it," he told a cheering crowd at NYU shortly after arriving at Newark Liberty International Airport on Saturday evening.
"We should link our arms to continue in the fight for the goodness in the world and to fight against injustice. So, I think that all people should apply themselves to this end to work for the common good worldwide."
Chen was suddenly allowed to leave China earlier in the day, ending a dispute that tested U.S.-China relations.
Dressed in a white shirt and khaki pants and using crutches, his right leg in a cast, Chen was greeted with cheers when he arrived at the apartment in Manhattan's Greenwich Village where he will live with his family. The complex houses faculty and graduate students of New York University, where Chen is expected to attend law school.
"For the past seven years, I have never had a day's rest," Chen said through a translator, "so I have come here for a bit of recuperation for body and in spirit."
Chen thanked the U.S. and Chinese governments, along with the embassies of Switzerland, Canada and France.
"After much turbulence, I have come out of Shandong," he said, referring to the Chinese province where he was under house arrest. The U.S. has granted him partial citizenship rights, he said.
Chen gave a short statement, which was greeted by cheers in Mandarin and English. He didn't take questions from reporters.
The departure of Chen, his wife and two children to the United States marked the conclusion of nearly a month of uncertainty and years of mistreatment by local authorities for the self-taught activist.
After seven years of prison and house arrest, Chen made a daring escape from his rural village in April and was given sanctuary inside the U.S. Embassy, triggering a diplomatic standoff over his fate. With Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in Beijing for annual high-level discussions, officials struck a deal that let Chen walk free, only to see him have second thoughts. That forced new negotiations that led to an agreement to send him to the U.S. to study law, a goal of his, at New York University.
"Thousands of thoughts are surging to my mind," Chen said before he left China. His concerns, he said, included whether authorities would retaliate for his negotiated departure by punishing his relatives left behind. It also was unclear whether the government will allow him to return.
In New York, he said China had promised him protection of his rights as a citizen there.
"I am very gratified to see that the Chinese government has been dealing with the situation with restraint and calm, and I hope to see that they continue to open discourse and earn the respect and trust of the people."
Chen's expected attendance at New York University comes from his association with Jerome Cohen, a law professor there who advised Chen while he was in the U.S. Embassy. The two met when Chen came to the United States on a State Department program in 2003, and Cohen has been staunch advocate for him since.
Before leaving China, Chen asked his supporters and others in the activist community for their understanding of his desire to leave the front lines of the rights struggle in China.
"I am requesting a leave of absence, and I hope that they will understand," he said.
State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland praised the quiet negotiations that freed him.
"We also express our appreciation for the manner in which we were able to resolve this matter and to support Mr. Chen's desire to study in the U.S. and pursue his goals," Nuland said in a statement.
The White House also said it was pleased with the outcome of negotiations.
China's Foreign Ministry said it had no comment. The government's news agency, Xinhua, issued a brief report saying that Chen "has applied for study in the United States via normal channels in line with the law."
Chen's supporters welcomed his departure. "This is great progress," said U.S.-based rights activist Bob Fu. "It's a victory for freedom fighters."
The 40-year-old Chen is emblematic of a new breed of activists that the Communist Party finds threatening. Often from rural and working-class families, these "rights defenders," as they are called, are unlike the students and intellectuals from the elite academies and major cities of previous democracy movements and thus could potentially appeal to ordinary Chinese.
Chen gained recognition for crusading for the disabled and for farmers' rights and fighting against forced abortions in his rural community. That angered local officials, who seemed to wage a personal vendetta against him, convicting him in 2006 on what his supporters say were fabricated charges and then holding him for the past 20 months in illegal house arrest.
Even with the backstage negotiations, Chen's departure came hastily. Chen spent the last 2 1/2 weeks in a hospital for the foot he broke escaping house arrest. Only on Wednesday did Chinese authorities help him complete the paperwork needed for his passport.
Chen said by telephone Saturday that he was informed at the hospital just before noon to pack his bags to leave. Officials did not give him and his family passports or inform them of their flight details until after they got to the airport.
Seeming ambivalent, Chen said that he was "not happy" about leaving and that he had a lot on his mind, including worries about retaliation against his extended family back home. His nephew, Chen Kegui, is accused of attempted murder after he allegedly used a kitchen knife to attack officials who stormed his house after discovering Chen Guangcheng was missing.
"I hope that the government will fulfill the promises it made to me, all of its promises," Chen said. Such promises included launching an investigation into abuses against him and his family in Shandong province, he said before the phone call was cut off.
Much as Chen has said he wants return to China, it remains uncertain whether the Chinese government would bar him, as they have done with many exiled activists.
"Chen's departure for the U.S. does not and should not in any way mark a 'mission accomplished' moment for the U.S. government," said Phelim Kine, a senior Asia researcher at Human Rights Watch. "The harder, longer-term part is ensuring his right under international law to return to China when he sees fit."

Way back in 2005, I posted a graph of "the Real Estate Agent Boom". I saw the following article, and decided to update the graph of the number of real estate licensees in California.
Eric Wolff at the NC Times writes: Real estate agents bailing out, except in Southwest Riverside County
Real estate agents are getting out of the profession in California ---- except in Southwest Riverside County, according to the California Department of Real Estate and the Southwest Riverside County Association of Realtors.
A housing crunch left real estate agents faced with selling houses for less than what homeowners owed in mortgages, working with lenders suddenly terrified to give out loans, and otherwise battling headwinds that dramatically reduced their sales.
For many agents, especially those attracted by a housing boom that made the profession seem like easy money, that meant it was time to leave. But in Southwest Riverside County, a few people decided a slow market was just the time to jump in.
Click on graph for larger image.
Here is a long term graph of the number of real estate licensees in California. The number of agents peaked at the end of 2007 (housing activity peaked in 2005, and prices in 2006).
The number of salesperson's licenses is off 29% from the peak, and has fallen to 2004 levels. But brokers' licenses are only off 7% and has only fallen to early 2007 levels. Even if activity and prices have bottomed, the number of agents will probably continue to decline.
