Apple holds annual shareholder meeting, Tim Cook talks competition, stock price, new product categories

Apple holds annual shareholder meeting

Apple?s annual shareholder?s meeting was held this morning at the company?s Cupertino headquarters. These meeting are to allow shareholders to ask questions of Apple?s leadership, as well as hold elections for the board of directors. According to CNBC, the entire board was reelected, Apple?s accounting firm was approved, and a proposal to establish a Human Rights board committee was defeated. Additionally, Bloomberg reports that Tim Cook received 99.1% investor approval as CEO.

Following the formal company business, the meeting was opened up to a Q&A. Questioned about Apple?s new headquarters, Cook said that Apple was planning on moving into that building at some point in 2016. This is due to a delays caused by some redesigns of some aspects of the new campus, as reported in November.

Cook also took questions about the competition, the stock price, and future products. Cook said that while market share is important, the actions that Apple could take to gain market share quickly would ultimately be bad for Apple. Reuters says that Cook is aware that shareholders are disappointed by the current stock price, and that focus should be on the long term, and revenue and profits following. On new products, Cook said that Apple is exploring ?new categories,? but did not elaborate on what those might be.

Police: MC Hammer pulled over for expired tags

DUBLIN, Calif. (AP) ? A sheriff's department spokesman in Northern California says a Dublin police officer stopped and then arrested MC Hammer because the '90s rap star was driving a car with expired registration and refused to get out of the vehicle.

Lt. Herb Walters of the Alameda County Sheriff's Office said in a statement issued Monday that Hammer was "very argumentative" with the officer during the traffic stop late Thursday. He says it's unclear who owns the car.

Hammer eventually came out of the car and was arrested for investigation of obstructing an officer in the performance of his duties.

Hammer, who was born Stanley Burrell, has offered a different account, suggesting he was the victim of racial profiling. He tweeted on Saturday that the officer asked him if he were on parole or probation and tried to pull him out through the car window.

Maize in diets of people in coastal Peru dates to 5,000 years ago

Feb. 25, 2013 ? For decades, archaeologists have struggled with understanding the emergence of a distinct South American civilization during the Late Archaic period (3000-1800 B.C.) in Peru. One of the persistent questions has been the role of agriculture and particularly corn (maize) in the evolution of complex, centralized societies. Up until now, the prevailing theory was that marine resources, not agriculture and corn, provided the economic engine behind the development of civilization in the Andean region of Peru.

Now, breakthrough research led by Field Museum curator Dr. Jonathan Haas is providing new resolution to the issue by looking at microscopic evidence found in soil, on stone tools, and in coprolites from ancient sites and dated with over 200 Carbon-14 dates.

After years of study, Haas and his colleagues have concluded that during the Late Archaic, maize (Zea mays, or corn) was indeed a primary component in the diet of people living in the Norte Chico region of Peru, an area of remarkable cultural florescence in 3rd millennium B.C. Their research is the subject of a paper that appears in the online Early Edition issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) the week of February 25, 2013..

"This new body of evidence demonstrates quite clearly that the very earliest emergence of civilization in South America was indeed based on agriculture as in the other great civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, and China," said Haas.

Haas and his team focused on sites in the desert valleys of Pativilca and Fortaleza north of Lima where broad botanical evidence pointed to the extensive production, processing and consumption of maize between 3000 and 1800 B.C. They studied a total of 13 sites. The two most extensively studied sites were Caballete, about six miles inland from the Pacific Ocean and consisting of six large platform mounds arranged in a "U" shape, and the site of Huaricanga, about 14 miles inland and consisting one very large mound and several much smaller mounds on either side.

The scientists targeted several areas at the sites including residences, trash pits, ceremonial rooms, and campsites. A total of 212 radiocarbon dates were obtained in the course of all the excavations.

Macroscopic remains of maize (kernels, leaves, stalks, and cobs) were rare.

However, the team looked deeper and found an abundance of microscopic evidence of maize in various forms in the excavations. One of the clearest markers was the abundance of maize pollen in the prehistoric soil samples. While maize is grown in the area today, they were able to rule out modern day contamination because modern maize pollen grains are larger and turn dark red when stain is applied. Also, modern soil samples consistently contain pollen from the Australian Pine (Casuarinaceae Casuarina), a plant which is an invasive species from Australia never found in prehistoric samples.

A majority of the soil samples analyzed came from trash pits associated with residential architecture. Other samples were taken from places such as room floors and construction debris. Of the 126 soil samples (not counting stone tools and coprolites) analyzed, 61 contained Z. mays pollen. (In fact, Z. mays was the second most common pollen found in the total of all samples, behind only pollen from cattails which have wind-pollinated flowers.) This is consistent with the percentage of maize pollen found in pollen analyses from sites in other parts of the world where maize is a major crop and constitutes the primary source of calories in the diet.

Haas and his colleagues also analyzed residues on stone tools used for cutting, scraping, pounding, and grinding. The tools were examined for evidence of plant residues, particularly starch grains and phytoliths (plant silica bodies). Of the 14 stone tools analyzed, 11 had maize starch grains on the working surfaces and two had maize phytoliths.

Coprolites (preserved fecal material) provide the best direct evidence of prehistoric diet. Among 62 coprolites analyzed of all types -- 34 human, 16 domesticated dog, and others from various animals -- 43 (or 69 percent) contained maize starch grains, phytoliths, or other remains. Of the 34 human coprolites, 23 (or 68 percent) contained evidence of maize. (The second most common grain in humans came from sweet potatoes.) Coprolites also showed that fish, mostly anchovies, did provide the primary protein in the diet, but not the calories.

The researchers concluded that the prevalence of maize in multiple contexts and in multiple sites indicates this domesticated food crop was grown widely in the area and constituted a major portion of the local diet, and it was not used just on ceremonial occasions. The research ultimately confirms the importance of agriculture in providing a strong economic base for the rise of complex, centralized societies in the emergence of the world's civilizations.

Economists predicting moderate growth in 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Business economists expect 2013 will be another year of sub-par growth for the U.S. economy, reflecting uncertainty stemming from the budget battles in Washington and Europe's on-going debt problems. But they think the economy will improve as the year progresses and by 2014 will grow at the fastest pace in nine years.

In its latest survey of top forecasters, the National Association for Business Economics said it expected the economy, as measured by the gross domestic product, to expand at an annual rate of 2 percent this year, slightly worse than last year's lackluster 2.2 percent growth.

For 2014, however, the NABE forecasters believe the economy will be growing at a rate of 2.8 percent, which would be the best performance since 2005. The GDP, the economy's total output of goods and services, shrank in 2008 and 2009 as the country went through the worst economic contraction since the Great Depression of the 1930s.

Since then economic growth has been modest as the economy has been held back by a variety of factors including prolonged unemployment.

The latest quarterly forecast from NABE is based on responses from 49 forecasters gathered from Jan. 28 through Feb. 5. On growth, it represented a slight downgrade from the survey released in December which forecast the economy would grow 2.1 percent this year.

The NABE panelists were pessimistic about the effects the budget battles in Washington would have on growth. Nearly all felt growth would be reduced this year, given the uncertainty surrounding the budget. One-half of the panelists felt the drag would shave less than one-half percentage point from growth while one-third put the drag at between one-half and a full percentage point knocked off growth this year.

The panelists saw the economy strengthening as the budget uncertainty is resolved. They forecast growth in the second half of this year would average above a rate of 2.5 percent and get stronger next year.

"While the NABE forecasters see fiscal threats, they are optimistic that there will be some resolution toward the second half of this year and that will result in an improvement in many of the numbers is 2014," said Nayantara Hensel, an economics professor at the National Defense University in Washington and a member of the NABE forecasting panel.

The next budget deadline will occur Friday when across-the-board spending cuts totaling $85 billion, known as a sequester, are scheduled to go into effect.

Congress and President Barack Obama averted the so-called fiscal cliff at the end of December with a deal that allowed tax rates to rise on individuals making more than $400,000 and families making more than $450,000 per year. That deal also allowed the temporary 2 percentage point cut in Social Security payroll taxes, which was in effect for two years, to expire.

The tax increases in the fiscal-cliff deal, especially the rise in Social Security payroll taxes, will mean slower growth this year. It will mean that a worker earning $50,000 annually will see his Social Security tax go up by $1,000.

That will slow consumer spending, which accounts for 70 percent of economic activity. The NABE panel forecast consumer spending will rise at an annual rate of 1.9 percent this year but will accelerate in 2014 to a growth rate of 2.5 percent.

The NABE panelists were also pessimistic about Europe's on-going budget troubles, which have hurt the U.S. economy by cutting into export sales. Over one-third of the panelists said they believe Spain will need a larger bailout package this year and one-fourth think that on-going debt troubles in Italy will force that country to take bailout support as well.

"The problems in Europe and our own domestic fiscal drama will keep the investment outlook subdued," said Kenneth Simonson, chief economist for the Associated General Contractors of America and a member of the NABE panel.

Among other predictions in the latest NABE survey:

?Unemployment, currently at 7.9 percent, will decline slowly to 7.5 percent by the end of this year and to 7 percent by the end of 2014, with average monthly job growth of 170,000 this year and 193,000 in 2014.

?Inflation will remain modest at around 2 percent, giving the Federal Reserve leeway to keep a key short-term interest rate at a record low near zero this year and in 2014.

?New home construction, which is finally rebounding after the housing bust, will jump 25.6 percent this year and another 17.3 percent in 2014, pushing construction next year to 1.15 million homes.

Study reveals how people with a severe unexplained psychological illness have abnormal activity in the brain

Psychogenic diseases, formerly known as 'hysterical' illnesses, can have many severe symptoms such as painful cramps or paralysis but without any physical explanation. However, new research from the University of Cambridge and UCL (University College London) suggests that individuals with psychogenic disease, that is to say physical illness that stems from emotional or mental stresses, do have brains that function differently. The research was published today, 25 February, in the journal Brain.

Psychogenic diseases may look very similar to illnesses caused by damage to nerves, the brain or the muscles, or similar to genetic diseases of the nervous system. However, unlike organic diseases, psychogenic diseases do not have any apparent physical cause, making them difficult to diagnose and even more difficult to treat.

"The processes leading to these disorders are poorly understood, complex and highly variable. As a result, treatments are also complex, often lengthy and in many cases there is poor recovery. In order to improve treatment of these disorders, it is important to first understand the underlying mechanism," said Dr James Rowe from the University of Cambridge.

The study looked at people with either psychogenic or organic dystonia, as well as healthy people with no dystonia. Both types of dystonia caused painful and disabling muscle contractions affecting the leg. The organic patient group had a gene mutation (the DYT1 gene) that caused their dystonia. The psychogenic patients had the symptoms of dystonia but did not have any physical explanation for the disease, even after extensive investigations.

The scientists performed PET brain scans on the volunteers at UCL, to measure the blood flow and brain activity of both of the groups, and healthy volunteers. The participants were scanned with three different foot positions: resting, moving their foot, and holding their leg in a dystonic position. The electrical activity of the leg muscles was measured at the same time to determine which muscles were engaged during the scans.

The researchers found that the brain function of individuals with the psychogenic illness was not normal. The changes were, however, very different from the brains of individuals with the organic (genetic) disease.

Dr Anette Schrag, from UCL, said: "Finding abnormalities of brain function that are very different from those in the organic form of dystonia opens up a way for researchers to learn how psychological factors can, by changing brain function, lead to physical problems."

Dr Rowe added: "What struck me was just how very different the abnormal brain function was in patients with the genetic and the psychogenic dystonia. Even more striking was that the differences were there all the time, whether the patients were resting or trying to move."

Additionally, the researchers found that one part of the brain previously thought to indicate psychogenic disease is unreliable: abnormal activity of the prefrontal cortex was thought to be the hallmark of psychogenic diseases. In this study, the scientists showed that this abnormality is not unique to psychogenic disease, since activity was also present in the patients with the genetic cause of dystonia when they tried to move their foot.

Dr Arpan Mehta, from the University of Cambridge, said: "It is interesting that, despite the differences, both types of patient had one thing in common - a problem at the front of the brain. This area controls attention to our movements and although the abnormality is not unique to psychogenic dystonia, it is part of the problem."

This type of illness is very common. Dr Schrag said: "One in six patients that see a neurologist has a psychogenic illness. They are as ill as someone with organic disease, but with a different cause and different treatment needs. Understanding these disorders, diagnosing them early and finding the right treatment are all clearly very important. We are hopeful that these results might help doctors and patients understand the mechanism leading to this disorder, and guide better treatments."

Achieving Lifelong Fitness | Albany Tribune News

Elderly

By Albany Tribune -- (February 23, 2013)

(CORDIS) ? More and more Europeans are living longer. It has been predicted that by 2050, the number of people in the EU aged 65 and above will grow by 70%, while the number of people aged over 80 will increase by 170%. This raises important challenges for the 21st century: meeting the higher demand for healthcare; the need to adapt health systems to the needs of an ageing population and ensuring the sustainability of welfare with a smaller workforce.

Older adults are at higher risk from developing chronic illnesses and disabilities. These conditions include diabetes, arthritis congestive heart failure, Parkinson?s and Alzheimer?s disease. Many have to be hospitalised or put in nursing homes, as many lose the ability to live independently at home. Chronic conditions are the leading cause of death among older adults.

Because older people have different healthcare requirements, health systems need to adapt in order to provide adequate care and remain financially sustainable. It has been established that the longer an older person stays at home, the better it is for their health. A second issue is that the longer a person is fit and stays fit, the easier it is to keep illnesses away.

Many seniors however feel discouraged by certain fitness barriers, such as chronic health conditions or concerns about injury or falls. In some cases, if the person has never exercised before, they may not know where to begin. Ongoing health problems or disabilities can also stop people from getting active. Certain diseases, such as Parkinson?s also inhibit a person?s ability to perform simple tasks such as walking.

In order to address these issues, researchers have developed an intelligent armchair called GEWOS, which can motivate people to keep themselves healthy and fit.

The project, entitled ?GEWOS? (an abbreviation for the German ?Gesund wohnen mit Stil? meaning Healthy Living in Style), is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and is being carried out by six business and research partners, in addition to the IIS. The goal is to create an assistance system that is easy to operate and will be accepted by senior citizens. In addition to the exercise armchair, GEWOS also includes a web platform as a central interface for information management. The platform can be used to call up health-relevant data and to integrate physicians and health experts.

On the outside, GEWOS looks like a conventional armchair. Even when you sit down you don?t notice any difference. But first glances can be deceiving. A glimpse inside the armchair reveals sensors, circuit boards and all kinds of wiring. The microsystem technology built into the seat cushions, backrest and armrest constantly measures the state of health of the seated person. ?GEWOS measures the key bodily functions and determines the correct sitting posture. If the acquired values deviate from specifications, the system shows the user how he or she can practice improving endurance or sitting in a healthier position,? explains Sven Feilner of the Image Processing and Medical Technology Department at IIS.

A tablet PC applied to the armchair transmits data to the TV via Bluetooth and WLAN. Feilner describes the system: ?At a glance the user can view trends in pulse rate, blood oxygen saturation, blood pressure or weight over a certain period of time. A virtual health assistant uses the recorded data to come up with exercise plans tailored to the user and updates these plans based on the progress made?. If the values fall outside a prescribed range the health assistant may recommend more exercise. Then, the armchair is transformed into a rowing machine of the kind seen in fitness studios. The armrests become the oars, and a support for the rower?s feet pops out below the seat. Individual exercises are easy to call up through the television. ?Here too the sensors record all of the values and the health assistant lets the user know if any exercises are not being executed correctly,? Feilner continues.

The armchair has already passed its first test with flying colours. Last year, at the Ambient Assisted Living Conference 2012, 100 senior citizens tested the GEWOS armchair and ranked it in first place, among 14 different assistance products.

Looking to the future, next steps include a comprehensive evaluation of the finishing touches. ?We?re very confident that we?ll be able to market the armchair together with our partners in the foreseeable future,? says Feilner. The scientists in Erlangen want to use people?s natural play instincts to help them add cognitive games to the system?s capabilities. Senior citizens should not just row against imaginary competitors; memory games should also encourage them to participate. By making a mental note of individual segments of the armchair, for instance, and then placing weight on them using the corresponding part of their body.

The truth is that older people need to keep moving, and that exercising is crucial to staying energetic and healthy. Reaping the rewards of exercise does not necessarily require strenuous workouts or trips to the gym. As this project has shown, it?s about adding more movement and activity, even in very small ways. ?The exercise armchair promises to give seniors an easy and motivating way to stay fit,? Feilner concludes.

Raul Castro announces retirement in 2018

?

Cuba's President Raul Castro (R) gestures while talking to the media at the Soviet Soldier monument in Havana February 22, 2013.

By Marc Frank, Reuters

HAVANA - Cuban leader Raul Castro announced on Sunday he would step down from power after his second term as president ends in 2018, and the new parliament named a 52-year-old rising star to become his first vice president and most visible successor.

Castro, 81, made the announcement in a nationally broadcast speech shortly after the Cuban National Assembly elected him to a second five-year term in the opening session of the new parliament.

"This will be my last term," Castro said.

In a surprise move, the new parliament named as his first vice president Miguel Diaz-Canel, a member of the political bureau who rose through the party ranks in the provinces to become the most visible possible successor to Castro. Diaz-Canel would succeed Castro if he cannot serve his full term.

?

The new government will almost certainly be the last headed up by the Castro brothers and their followers who have ruled Cuba since they swept down from the mountains in the 1959 revolution.

Raul Castro starts his second term immediately, leaving him free to retire in 2018, aged 86.

Former president Fidel Castro joined the meeting, in a rare public appearance. Since falling ill in 2006 and ceding the presidency to his brother, the elder Castro, 86, has given up official positions except as a deputy in the National Assembly.

Governments, Cuba watchers and Cubans were keenly observing to see if any new, and younger, faces might appear among the Council of State members, in particular its first vice president and five vice presidents.

Their hopes were partially fulfilled with Diaz-Canel's ascension. He replaces former first vice president, Jose Machado Ventura, 82, who will continue on as one of five vice presidents. Commander of the Revolution Ramiro Valdes, 80, and Gladys Bejerano, 66, the comptroller general were also re-elected as vice presidents.

Two other newcomers, Mercedes L?pez Acea, 48, first secretary of the Havana communist party, and Salvador Valdes Mesa, 64, head of the official labor federation, also earned vice presidential slots.

Former vice president Esteban Lazo, member of the political bureau of the Communist Party, 68, left his post upon being named parliament president on Sunday, replacing Ricardo Alarcon, who served for 20 years.

Six of the Council's top seven members sit on the party's political bureau which is also lead by Castro.

The National Assembly meets for just a few weeks each year and delegates its legislative powers between sessions to the 31-member Council of State, which also functions as the nation's executive through the Council of Ministers it appoints.

Eighty percent of the 612 deputies, who were elected in an uncontested vote February 3 and with an average age under 50, were born after the Revolution.

Cyprus' oil stocks amount to 208 thousand metric tons

Cyprus maintains oil stocks amounting to 208 thousand metric tons, stored in the premises of the Cyprus Petroleum Storage Company in the coastal city of Larnaca and in refineries in Greece, according to the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Neoclis Sylikiotis.

The remaining of the oil stocks Cyprus is obliged to maintain is covered by operational stocks of the Cyprus Electricity Authority and rented stocks abroad.

Addressing the General Assembly of the Cyprus Organisation for Storage and Management of Oil Stocks (COSMOS), on Friday, Commerce Minister said that currently COSMOS is faced with two challenges.

First its participation in the oil terminal to be built in Vasilikos where national stocks of oil will be stored and second the harmonization with the European Directive on the method for calculating stockholding obligations and the method for calculating the level of stocks held in case of emergency.

Sylikiotis said that the Dutch company Vopak has been chosen for the oil terminal of Vasilikos and negotiations have already started. He expressed hope that negotiations will soon be concluded in order to start building the terminal.

COSMOS has the obligation to maintain quantities that are equal to 90 days of inland consumption. The minimum oil stocks that are maintained by COSMOS are prescribed in an Order by the Minister. ??Copyright Famagusta Gazette 2012 All comments are now moderated

US Senator Marco Rubio Wraps Up Trip to Israel

1x1.trans US Senator Marco Rubio Wraps Up Trip to Israel

Credit: Gage Skidmore

On Friday, Florida US Senator Marco Rubio returned from a trip to Israel. It was the senator?s second trip to the region.

The trip comes fresh off the Republican response to the State of the Union address, delivered by Rubio. It also comes a few weeks ahead of President Obama?s first trip to Israel as president and fuels speculation that the senator is contemplating a White House run in 2016.

One staunch Rubio supporter, the Washington Post?s Jennifer Rubin, called Rubio?s visit as ?fluid, disciplined, and informed as any senator in recent memory.? Without any significant gaffes, Rubio even managed to poke fun at his now-infamous water sip during his State of the Union response.

While in Israel, Rubio met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and spoke on several issues pertinent to the region: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, settlements on the West Bank, Syria, and Iran?s nuclear program.

Meeting with Israeli President Shimon Peres, Rubio reasserted the claim of many past American politicians that Jerusalem was ?of course, the capital of Israel.? On the issue of Israeli settlements on the West Bank, one of the more controversial elements in the Israeli-Palestinian divide, Rubio reiterated that the United States should not ?go in and dictate what the resolution of that issue [the settlements] should be.?

Regarding the United States? relationship with Israel, Rubio was effusive:

?There is no more important relationship for the United States, perhaps in the world but certainly in the region, than Israel. It?s one that has bipartisan support and I?m proud to say that Republicans and Democrats are united on that. . . . The ties between the United States and Israel are unbreakable.?

On Iran, Rubio reiterated his past support for sanctions. He told listeners he hoped future sanctions would be ?intensified.? He also warned that even with sanctions, America?s objective in deterring nuclear proliferation may fail.

On Syria, Rubio offered a more wide-ranging, expansionist role for the US. On British television, Rubio said the US and the West should be more engaged:

?I know it?s difficult because the question is who do we engage with? But what I can say to the world is that if we?re not engaged ? then I think we increase the chances that the outcome there is going to be very negative ? The more involved we are, of course, the more influence we may have over not just who governs over Syria in the future, but what direction that they go??

?I think one of the things we begin to explore is providing ammunition to the rebels. ? That?s something I hope that some policymakers will consider because I do think that over the last few months a more responsible group of actors have emerged in contrast to some of the more radical elements that are on the ground in Syria. And we want them to be the strongest and most influential voices in a post-Assad Syria.?

During the short time he has been in Washington, US Senator Marco Rubio has made a name for himself. By traveling to Israel ahead of President Obama and making several of the customary stops, Rubio is placing himself in early presidential discussion.

Watch These Quadcopters Flip A Reverse Pendulum Into The Air And Catch It (No, Seriously, Watch)

While I hate using BuzzFeed-style headlines, this video warrants the hyperbole. We're all familiar with the magic of quadcopters - they can fly in formation, roll around obstacles, and even interact with each other. This video demo, however, takes the cake. These little fellows are flying in formation while balancing a reverse pendulum. They're essentially doing baton tricks in mid-air.

Energy Drinks May Be Harmful For Adolescents

American Academy of Pediatrics has been warning parents and medical professionals for years that energy drinks can be harmful for children and adolescents. Recent Report named Energy Drinks: What Teenagers (and Their Doctors) Should Know, published in the journal Pediatrics in Review, confirmed these findings. The pediatricians are now joined by two senators and one US Representative in asking FDA to review the safety of energy drinks for children.

Energy drinks vs. sports drinks

Both energy drinks and sports drinks are widely advertised for teenagers and adolescents and are now a multibillion dollars industry. But, there is little or no knowledge about the difference between the two types of beverages, their effects and potential danger.

Sports drinks are beverages in various flavors, which contain electrolytes (sodium, calcium, potassium and magnesium), carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins and other nutrients. While they can be used for rehydration for young athletes after excessive exercise or competition, there is no reason to use them instead of water after normal children exercise.

Energy drinks contain mostly stimulants, commonly caffeine and sometimes guarana, carbohydrate, protein, sodium, amino acids, vitamins and other additives. Caffeine is well known for its harmful effects on the health of adolescents. The most common problems are dehydration, obesity, digestive problems, anxiety, tachycardia and insomnia. Energy drinks sometimes contain alcohol, but even if they do not, they are commonly consumed mixed with alcohol.

Energy drinks and alcohol

According to a Report published recently by SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration), energy drink consumption caused two times more visits to the emergency room in 2011 than in 2007. Most patients were teenagers and young adults. About 42 percents of emergency room visits in 2011 were due to the consumption of energy drinks with alcohol or various medications.

Doctors warn that energy drinks have the ability to mask the amount of alcohol consumed, bypassing our natural sense when it is enough and allowing overindulgence.

The latest report published by the American Academy of Pediatrics prompted U.S. Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) together with U.S. Representative Ed Markey (D-MA) to write a letter to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), calling for a new review of the safety of energy drinks.

One of the most popular energy drinks Red Bull has been banned for sale in France for the last nine years, because of too much caffeine as well as an amino acid taurine, which affects metabolism.
