NASA Captures Amazing View of Tropical Storm Isaac at Night (Photos)

A NASA satellite captured a spectacular photo of what is now Hurricane Isaac from space, a nighttime view showing the then-tropical storm's clouds lit up by moonlight as it approached the U.S. Gulf Coast.

NASA's Suomi-NPP weather tracking satellite recorded the amazing nighttime photo of Isaac just after midnight on Tuesday (Aug. 28). The bright city lights of New Orleans, Houston and Tampa, Fla., can be easily identified, but the photo also includes lights from cities all along the Gulf Coast, Florida and the southeast U.S. coast.

"The image was acquired just after local midnight by the VIIRS 'day-night band,' which detects light in a range of wavelengths from green to near-infrared and uses light intensification to enable the detection of dim signals," NASA officials explained in an image description. "In this case, the clouds of Isaac were lit by moonlight."

Hurricane Isaac is currently a Category 1 hurricane and made two landfalls late Tuesday in Louisiana. As of 10 a.m. EDT (1400 GMT) today (Aug. 29), Isaac is battering Louisiana and neighboring states with drenching rains and maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour (120 kilometers per hour), according to the latest National Hurricane Center update.

NASA and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration are using several satellites to track Hurricane Isaac as it slowly moves across the Gulf Coast.

"Flooding is a big threat from Isaac because of its slow movement, and because it is drawing a lot of energy from the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico," NASA spokesman Rob Gutro wrote in a hurricane update. "Isolated tornadoes are also possible as Isaac continues moving inland."

Forensic Test Predicts Eye and Hair Color From DNA

An anonymous reader writes "A forensic test that has been developed to help police nab perpetrators of crimes can predict a suspect's eye color, hair color, and ethnic origin. The test's ability and the science behind it has been outlined in Forensic Science International: Genetics (abstract). Developed by Susan Walsh and other researchers from the Netherlands, Greece, and Poland, the test uses phenotypes from DNA to ... predict a suspect's appearance using 'low amounts of template DNA, as well as degraded DNA,' which means that the DNA does not need to be perfect in order for the system to read it."

Blindsight: Animals that See Without Eyes [Slide Show]

EYE SEE YOU: Compound eye of the Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba Image: (Photo by Gerd Alberti and Uwe Kil, via Wikimedia Commons

Light bathes our planet, splashing off the mountaintops, flooding the deserts, tundra, savanna and forests, and seeping as deep as 1,000 meters into the ocean. Bacteria, plants, animals and all kinds of living things have evolved different ways to detect and respond to light. Despite their familiarity and prevalence, eyes are not essential.

Biologists have known for several decades that some eyeless animals perceive light. Likewise, some animals with eyes?even rather sophisticated eyes?rely on other body parts to see. Exactly how organisms sense light without eyes has, in many cases, remained mysterious. In recent years, with the help of new tools like genome sequencing, scientists have discovered light-sensitive cells and proteins in unexpected places, and have established that creatures once thought to be blind can in fact see. Light-reactive proteins cover the ends of a sea urchin's feet, for example, possibly turning the spiky animal's whole body into a compound eye. Similarly, tiny jellyfish-like hydras can sense light with their stinging tentacles. And although nematodes live in darkness underground, some of their neurons respond to light, helping them wriggle away from danger.

View a slide show of animals that see without eyes.

These new insights are changing how biologists understand the evolution and function of vision. Two important questions are when light-sensitive proteins first evolved and in what ways animals originally used these proteins. Another question is whether complex eyes evolved many times in different groups of animals or if later generations inherited and tinkered with a single primitive eye archetype. Although biologists do not yet have definitive answers to these inquiries, it's already clear that vision and light-detection are older, more diverse and more widespread than researchers previously realized. Here are six striking examples of animals that have surprised researchers with eyeless sight.

SEA URCHINS
Sea urchins respond to light in various ways: they might change color, twitch their spines or move toward or away from light. Scientists have known as much for a long time, but they were never certain how urchins detect light, because no known species has eyes of any kind. Their best guess was that the net of nerves enveloping an urchin's body included some diffuse light-sensitive tissue. The remarkable truth is that sea urchins have a much more organized visual system than anyone expected.

When researchers sequenced the genome of the purple sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus), they were surprised to discover a number of genes important for the development of the vertebrate retina?the thin sheet of light-sensitive tissue that lines the back of our eyes. Maria Arnone of the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn in Italy and her colleagues revealed that the ends of an urchin's tubular feet are pockmarked with opsins, the same light-sensitive proteins our own eyes depend on. When certain wavelengths of light hit an opsin protein, it changes shape, triggering a chemical cascade that opens tiny gates in cell walls called ion channels. Depending on the animal, this sequence of molecular events results in a reflexive behavior?like moving toward or away from light?or informs the nervous system about some aspect of vision. A sea urchin's hundreds of feet may act as one giant compound eye, allowing them to see just as well as a horseshoe crab or nautilus, both of which have genuine, if primitive, eyes.

HYDRAS
Hydras, tiny relatives of jellyfish, look like dandelion seeds: they have thin tubular bodies crowned with slender tentacles. They usually cling to weeds, stinging and eating even tinier aquatic invertebrates that swim by, such as water fleas (daphnia). Like sea urchins, hydras also respond to light even though they lack eyes. When scientists sequenced the genome of Hydra magnipapillata, they found plenty of opsin genes.

Recently, scientists confirmed that hydras have opsins in their tentacles, specifically in their stinging cells, known as cnidocytes. David Plachetzki of the University of California, Davis, and his colleagues showed that hydras respond not only to touch and chemicals, but also to changes in the light in their immediate environment. Hydras sting with greater force in dim light than in bright light, perhaps because they have evolved to recognize shadows as signs of prey or predators?the more they fire in the presence of a shadow, the likelier they are to hit their targets.

Hydras belong to one of the oldest groups of animals on the planet, the Cnidarians. Although hydras do not have eyes, other members of their family have simple eyes called ocelli. Box jellyfish have remarkably sophisticated eyes with lenses and retinas. The fact that hydras, which evolved much earlier than most Cnidarians, can detect light with their tentacles suggests that the origins of vision stretch further back in time than anyone realized. Later, jellyfish and other animals may have modified these existing, primitive visual systems to form more complex eyes.

SQUIDS, CUTTLEFISHES AND OCTOPUSES
Octopuses have large eyes and humongous occipital lobes?the parts of the brain that process vision. These wily, squishy marine masters of disguise can match the texture, color and patterns of almost anything in their environment. But they cannot see color?at least not with their eyes. The octopus eye is technically color-blind. So is the eye of the cuttlefish, a related mollusk.

Roger Hanlon of the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass., and his colleagues recently discovered that cuttlefishes actively express opsin genes throughout their skin, particularly in their fins and underbellies. And Desmond Ramirez of the University of California, Santa Barbara, has detected opsin genes in octopus skin. Octopus, squid and cuttlefish skin is also peppered with chromatophores?elastic sacks of pigment that expand and retract, allowing the mollusk to change its color. Other cells called iridophores and leucophores make the skin more or less reflective. Hanlon and his colleagues propose that opsins work with chromatophores, iridophores and leucophores in an unknown way to detect and mimic the color of nearby objects.

C. ELEGANS
Caenorhabditis elegans?tiny worm-like nematodes?live in complete darkness in the soil, so scientists assumed they could not perceive or respond to light. When X. Z. Shawn Xu of the University of Michigan and his colleagues shined beams of bright light at the nematodes' heads, however, they stopped inching forward and reversed direction. When the researchers flashed light at the tail or body of a nematode moving in reverse, the creature began wriggling forward instead. By annihilating various neurons in the nematodes' heads with a laser, Xu and his colleagues identified four cells without which C. elegans cannot perceive light. The researchers propose that avoiding light is an adaptation that helps nematodes stay in the soil, out of which they will not survive long (unless scientists keep them alive in the lab).

In later work, Xu and his team showed that the light-sensitive neurons in nematodes do not depend on opsins. Rather, they use LITE-1, a protein that functions as a taste receptor in invertebrates. A separate team of scientists discovered that neurons in fruit fly larvae detect light with a protein highly related to LITE-1. Like nematodes, it's advantageous for fly larvae to remain in the shadows, unexposed to harsh light and predators.

SWALLOWTAIL BUTTERFLIES
Japanese yellow swallowtail butterflies can see with their rear ends. More specifically, they have two light-sensitive neurons called photoreceptors on their abdomens, right next to their genitals. Kentaro Arikawa, now at The Graduate University for Advanced Studies in Japan, discovered that these light detectors are essential for swallowtail butterfly sex and reproduction. When yellow swallowtails mate, they precisely align their genitals while facing away from one another. Usually, the butterflies successfully complete their mating dance about 66 percent of the time. When Arikawa and his colleagues destroyed the photoreceptors on males' abdomens with heat, or covered the eyelets with black mascara, the insects mated successful only 23 to 28 percent of the time.

In a related study, Arikawa and his team ablated or painted the photoreceptors on pregnant females' abdomens and released the butterflies into a cage with a potted lemon tree. The insects successfully laid eggs on leaves 14 percent of the time, much lower than their usual 81 percent success rate. Together the evidence suggests that male swallowtail butterflies rely on light-detection to cozy up to females during mating and that female swallowtails depend on their hindsight to confirm that they have properly extended their ovipositor?the organ with which they attach eggs to leaves.

SCORPIONS
Scorpions instinctively avoid light. During the day, the eight-legged arachnids seek shelter beneath rocks, in underground crevices or in people's boots. At night they emerge to hunt small insects. Scorpions detect light, and may even perceive images, with two main eyes atop their heads as well as up to five pairs of nearby smaller eyes. Recently, scientists investigated whether scorpions can detect light with their skin as well. The answer is a preliminary yes.

Most scorpion species have a dark, waxy exoskeleton that looks like black or amber armor in daylight. If certain wavelengths of ultraviolet light strike a scorpion, however, it glows an eerie neon turquoise because of fluorescent molecules in its cuticle. Biologists have speculated that this fluorescence might help scorpions lure prey or warn predators to stay away; alternatively, the sheen might be an inevitable physical property of scorpion skin that offers no adaptive benefit.

Douglas Gaffin of the University of Oklahoma exposed 40 scorpions from Texas to both green light and UV light. Half the time the animals wore tiny aluminum foil eye patches; the other half their eyes were unobstructed. The scorpions were much less active under green light when their eyes were covered compared with when they were unmasked, but they were similarly active under UV light regardless of whether their eyes were exposed. One interpretation of this pattern is that scorpions change their behavior in response to UV light even when they cannot see with their eyes because their skin detects UV on its own. Another possibility is that scorpions somehow perceive the green light from their armor's turquoise fluorescence. Using its entire body to sense light, rather than its eyes alone, might improve a scorpion's chances of finding shelter during the day.

Akin releases new campaign ad asking for ?forgiveness?

Facing a fury of calls from his own party to drop out of the Missouri Senate race--and a 5 p.m. (CT) deadline to do so--embattled Republican Congressman Todd Akin released a new campaign ad early Tuesday apologizing for his comments about "legitimate rape"--and asking for forgiveness.

"Rape is an evil act," Akin says in the 30-second ad. "I used the wrong words in the wrong way and for that I apologize. As the father of two daughters, I want tough justice for predators. I have a compassionate heart for the victims of sexual assault. I pray for them. The fact is rape can lead to pregnancy. The truth is rape has many victims. The mistake I made was in the words I said, not in the heart I hold. I ask for your forgiveness."

On Monday, Republican leaders called for Akin to abandon his campaign against Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill, and Mitt Romney condemned the "legitimate rape" remarks.

"Congressman's Akin comments on rape are insulting, inexcusable and, frankly, wrong," Romney said. "Like millions of other Americans, we found them to be offensive."

[Related: Will Todd Akin drop out of Senate race?]

Akin then canceled a scheduled interview with CNN's Piers Morgan. Morgan proceeded to open his primetime show with a shot of Akin's empty chair, calling the embattled Republican Senate candidate a "gutless little twerp" for cancelling the sit-down.

"Congressman, you have an open invitation to join me in that chair whenever you feel up to it," Morgan said. "Because if you don't keep your promise to appear on the show, then you are, what we would call in Britain, a gutless little twerp."

Earlier Monday, several news outlets--including Buzzfeed--reported that Akin would withdraw from the race before Tuesday's deadline.

[Also read: Obama on Akin: 'Rape is rape']

In an interview on Mike Huckabee's radio show, Akin apologized for his "legitimate rape" comments, but said he wouldn't drop out of the race. "I'm not a quitter," Akin said.

Following the Huckabee interview, Akin tweeted: "I am in this race to win. We need a conservative Senate."

Akins' new campaign ad hits the airwaves a day after the powerful conservative super PAC Crossroads GPS announced it was pulling its advertising money from the Missouri Senate race amid the political firestorm Akin's comments created.

"First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy after rape] is really rare," Akin told St. Louis' KTVI-TV Fox affiliate in an interview broadcast on Sunday. "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

Akin said that even if a rape victim does somehow become pregnant, "there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child."

(AP) ? A newspaper is reporting San Francisco Giants All-Star Melky Cabrera tried to avoid a 50-game drug suspension by creating a fake website and product to support his claim that he inadvertently took the illegal substance.

The New York Daily News reported Sunday that Major League Baseball investigators quickly uncovered the scheme during the fact-finding phase of the case in July. The incident has drawn the attention of federal investigators. Cabrera was suspended Wednesday.

In their search for the source of the drug that caused elevated levels of testosterone in Cabrera's sample, investigators are looking into Juan Nunez, who is alleged to have paid for the website. Nunez is a consultant for Cabrera's agents, Sam and Seth Levinson.

Nunez told the newspaper the Levinsons had no knowledge of the website scheme.

San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy would not discuss the allegations against Cabrera before the Giants played the Padres in San Diego. He didn't defend his player's actions, either.

"You can be world-class parents and your kids can go south or have some issues. We can't follow guys 24/7, and it comes down to choices. (Cabrera) is a grown man, he's a veteran," Bochy said. "These are unfortunate things and we'll continue to work at cleaning out baseball."

France's Fabius says Syrian regime should be 'smashed fast'

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius called Friday for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime to be "smashed fast" as he visited Turkey's largest refugee camp near the border.

"The Syrian regime should be smashed fast," Fabius told reporters. "After hearing the refugees and their account of the massacres of the regime, Mr Bashar al-Assad doesn't deserve to be on this earth."

"It is an operation of destruction of an entire people that he is trying to accomplish," he said.

Fabius made the remarks at a refugee camp near the Oncupinar border crossing in Kilis province, where he met a number of Syrian refugees appealing to France for weapons and aid to fight the Damascus regime.

In response to the demands, Fabius said his country was helping out in the humanitarian field and added that Paris could not accept Assad's continued "massacre."

"The sooner this regime leaves, the better," he said.

Fabius repeated his calls for a speedy replacement of the regime "under controlled conditions" in Ankara, where he spoke to the press at a joint conference with Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu.

"We do not want chaos to follow the current situation," after the departure of the Assad regime, Fabius told reporters.

"Every single day gives Bashar Assad regime time to use for bombing his own people."

Joining his call, Davutoglu criticised the international community's "silence in the face of crimes against humanity," by loyalist forces in Aazaz, the rebel bastion near Aleppo.

Fabius had previously visited Jordan and Lebanon, where he had renewed calls for Assad to go in the face of his regime's relentless onslaught against Syrian civilians and predicted more "spectacular" defections to come soon.

Fabius was referring to the recent defections of Assad's prime minister Riad Hijab and general Manaf Tlass, his childhood friend and the son of a close aide of Assad's father Hafez, who ruled Syria with an iron fist.

The foreign minister was the first such official to be allowed entry into the Turkish refugee camp, one of several refugee settlements in Turkey's border provinces and houses around 12,000 people in prefabricated buildings.

The high-level clearance into Oncupinar camp, a Turkish diplomat told AFP, was the result of the improvement in French-Turkish ties after a tumultuous period during the term of the previous French president Nicolas Sarkozy.

Turkey has been one of the main regional powers denouncing Assad's regime, and frequently calls on the international community for financial aid to share the refugee burden.

In the last two weeks, Turkey has been hit by a mass exodus of refugees who flee across the border by few thousands daily to escape fierce clashes between regime forces and rebel fighters for Syria's second biggest city Aleppo.

The number of refugees on Turkish soil swelled over 65,000, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Thursday, as several thousands arrived after a deadly Syrian airstrike killed more than 30 in Aazaz, a few kilometres from the Turkish frontier.

2 Louisiana deputies killed, 2 injured in ambush

Gerald Herbert / AP

St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff deputies examine a car with bullet holes Thursday after two sheriffs were killed and two wounded in two shooting incidents in St. John the Baptist Parish, west of New Orleans, La.

By Louis Casiano, NBC News

Updated 6:45 p.m. ET:?

Authorities pledged in a news conference to bring to justice those responsible for shooting two Louisiana sheriff?s deputies to death and wounding two others in two separate but related incidents Thursday morning.

St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff Mike Tregre said that five suspects are in custody and that the Louisiana State Police have taken over the investigation.

?Our goal is not expediency in trying to rush to conclusions. We?re looking for facts and we?re going to build on those facts,? state police Col. Mike Edmonson said at the Thursday afternoon news conference.

Deputy Brandon Nielsen of the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office had been with the department for two years and was assigned to the traffic division.

The first shooting occurred around 5 a.m. in the parking lot of a Valero refinery in St. John the Baptist Parish, 35 miles west of New Orleans near the Mississippi River.

A deputy was working an off-duty traffic detail at the refinery when someone opened fire on his police vehicle, injuring him.

Moments later, police received a call from someone describing a speeding vehicle fleeing the scene of the shooting. Deputies tracked the vehicle to the Riverview Trailer Court, a trailer park, and began questioning residents.

Police handcuffed one suspect outside a trailer and knocked on its door. A man with a dog answered, and police noticed another man inside fully clothed under a blanket.

After the two men came outside with deputies for questioning, a third man jumped out of a trailer and began firing with an assault weapon.

Deputy Jeremy Triche was assigned to the canine division and was a 4-year veteran of the sheriff's department.

?Another person exited that trailer with an assault weapon and ambushed my two officers,? Tregre said.

Authorities identified the deputies killed as Brandon Nielsen, 34 and Jeremy Triche, 27. The wounded officers are Michael Scott Boyington, 33, and Jason Triche, 30. Officials have not said whether it was Boyington or Jason Triche who was injured in the first shooting.

Tregre said the two Triches are related in some way but was not sure how.

Earlier, officers from nearby parishes assisted in the search for the suspects.

Authorities are still trying to piece together what happened and what led to the shootings.

?Law enforcement is a profession where one day you may take a life, save a life or give your own, and today was one of those days,? Tregre told reporters.

Tregre, who took over the sheriff's office just 45 days ago, the called it ?one of the hardest days of my life so far.?

Nielsen and Jeremy Triche are the first St. John the Baptist Parish deputies to die in the line of duty since 2006, according the sheriff's website.

Meditation reduces loneliness

ScienceDaily (Aug. 14, 2012) ? Many elderly people spend their last years alone. Spouses pass and children scatter. But being lonely is much more than a silent house and a lack of companionship. Over time, loneliness not only takes a toll on the psyche but can have a serious physical impact as well.

Feeling lonely has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, Alzheimer's disease, depression and even premature death. Developing effective treatments to reduce loneliness in older adults is essential, but previous treatment efforts have had limited success.

What to do? Researchers at UCLA now report that a simple meditation program lasting just eight weeks reduced loneliness in older adults. Further, knowing that loneliness is associated with an increase in the activity of inflammation-related genes that can promote a variety of diseases, the researchers examined gene expression and found that this same form of meditation significantly reduced expression of inflammatory genes.

In the current online edition of the journal Brain, Behavior and Immunity, senior study author Steve Cole, a UCLA professor of medicine and psychiatry and a member of the Norman Cousins Center for Psychoneuroimmunology at UCLA, and colleagues report that the two-month program of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), which teaches the mind to simply be attentive to the present and not dwell in the past or project into the future, successfully reduced the feelings of loneliness.

Remarkably, the researchers said, MBSR also altered the genes and protein markers of inflammation, including the inflammatory marker C-reactive protein (CRP) and a group of genes regulated by the transcription factor NF-kB. CRP is a potent risk factor for heart disease, and NF-kB is a molecular signal that activates inflammation.

Inflammation is a natural component of the immune system and can help fight a wide variety of bodily insults, ranging from infections to a whack by a hammer. But chronic inflammation is now known to be a primary player in the pathology of many diseases and psychological disorders.

"Our work presents the first evidence showing that a psychological intervention that decreases loneliness also reduces pro-inflammatory gene expression," Cole said. "If this is borne out by further research, MBSR could be a valuable tool to improve the quality of life for many elderly."

In the study, 40 adults between the ages of 55 and 85 were randomly assigned to either a mindfulness meditation group or a control group that did not meditate. All the participants were assessed at the beginning and the end of the study using an established loneliness scale. Blood samples were also collected at the beginning and end to measure gene expression and levels of inflammation.

The meditators attended weekly two-hour meetings in which they learned the techniques of mindfulness, including awareness and breathing techniques. They also practiced mindfulness meditation for 30 minutes each day at home and attended a single daylong retreat.

These MBSR participants self-reported a reduced sense of loneliness, while their blood tests showed a significant decrease in the expression of inflammation-related genes.

"While this was a small sample, the results were very encouraging," said Dr. Michael Irwin, a professor of psychiatry at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA and director of the Cousins Center. "It adds to a growing body of research that is showing the positive benefits of a variety of meditative techniques, including tai chi and yoga."

Just last month, for example, Dr. Helen Lavretsky, a UCLA professor of psychiatry and a Cousins Center member, published a study showing that a form of yogic meditation involving chanting also reduced inflammatory gene expression, as well as stress levels, among individuals who care for patients with Alzheimer's disease.

"These studies begin to move us beyond simply connecting the mind and genome, and identify simple practices that an individual can harness to improve human health," Irwin said.

Philanthropy: The culture of asking

By Kate Hunter, Executive Director, CASE Europe.

There is nothing new about philanthropy and education. Many of the origins of the UK?s 250 or more higher education institutions lie in the generosity and far-sightedness of individuals, communities and organisations. Two centuries ago the citizens of Glasgow contributed through a subscription campaign to move the growing University of Glasgow to a new campus in the west end of the city; a legacy from insurer Barber Beaumont led to the establishment of the People?s Palace, an institution providing education for the people of the capital?s East End, today known as Queen Mary, University of London. Shipping magnate Joseph Constantine made a gift that led to the establishment of Constantine technical college in the north east, a predecessor institution of Teesside University.

These stories of transformation and philanthropic support for education are replicated in cities and institutions all over the country. Some might say that these are examples of Victorian philanthropy where a sense of moral duty or noblesse oblige among the wealthy was the driver behind such generosity. Today educational philanthropy is reinventing itself, with more and more people giving to support universities and a greater understanding and active support for the case for education. With state funding for higher education unlikely to increase, philanthropy has an increasingly significant role to play in HE?s financial equation. It will never replace state support, nor are donors motivated to support an institution?s core costs, but philanthropy can provide for the margin of excellence, accelerate change and allow for budget offsetting. Universities are ?exempt charities? and so asking for philanthropic support is completely legitimate; some may even refer to this as a moral imperative.

For almost a decade successive UK governments have recognized and encouraged, through a range of interventions, a culture of asking and giving to support higher education. A capacity building programme and a ?200m investment in the Matched Funding for Voluntary Giving scheme from 2008-2011 have focused on professionalizing fundraising and incentivising gifts. This pioneering initiative ? amid the economic crisis ? helped the number of donors giving to our higher education institutions grow to over 200,000, up by 20 per cent over two years, with cash income raised by the sector now reaching over ?0.5 billion per year for the last three years.

Universities are becoming more professional in their fundraising approaches and stewardship of donors. They are also increasingly able to communicate the positive impact that gifts of any size can make. They are getting better at ?asking?, which more frequently brings positive responses from alumni and others. Making a gift to a university is no longer the domain of just the very rich; it?s becoming something that ordinary people, including students, do. This year?s Loughborough University?s ?20.12 ?gradgift? scheme saw over 600 students and supporters contribute funds for? student hardship and other projects.

Today?s donors are motivated for three principal reasons. First, they want to create opportunities for scholarship and study, supporting deserving students in need of financial assistance, or projects which provide wider access to higher education. Second, they may be driven by a sense of gratitude for their own experiences of higher education and want to see that continued for the next generation. Third, donors of all sorts and sizes recognise that solutions for many of the challenges facing the global community lie in the university research laboratory, classroom or lecture hall. Our universities are where the answers to problems of global warming, health inequalities and social equity are to be found. Donors are excited by the truly cutting-edge research and transformative teaching that our universities continue to deliver on a regular basis.

In making a gift to a university, donors of all types and levels want their contribution to make a difference to a cause, project, institution or community that they care passionately about. This desire to achieve transformation and impact is a common motivation among donors. The ground-breaking ?7million gift, announced last week, from the John & Lucille van Geest Foundation to the University of Leicester to support cardiovascular research is undoubtedly an exceptional gift, motivated by similar reasons. It will have transformative effect on future cardiovascular patients in the Leicester community and ultimately globally ? they will benefit from accelerated research and personalised medicine.

Equally significantly, the Leicester gift is one of a growing number of multi-million pound donations made to an increasing number and type of institution across UK higher education. Recent gifts from Mica Ertegun and Michael Moritz to support scholarships at Oxford are truly inspirational, but let?s also applaud the ?10m gift to Southampton University for cancer immunology, Dickson Poon?s ?20m gift for King?s College London?s School of Law and Nat Puri?s ?1m gift for engineering at London South Bank University. These gifts raise ambitions, sights and set examples. While some institutions may have previously dismissed fundraising, saying ?we don?t have the tradition, projects or alumni profile?, the success of Leicester and other universities demonstrate that the cumulative fundraising advantage, or ?Matthew effect?, may not always be true. Next month?s HEFCE review of higher education philanthropy, led by Professor Shirley Pearce, is expected to bust that particular myth once and for all.

ROBERT PATTINSON DATING TAYLOR SWIFT | Weekly World News

Robert Pattinson revealed on ?The Daily Show? that he is now dating Taylor Swift.

His ex-girlfriend, Kristen Stewart, admitted to having with the married director of her last film and Robert Pattinson has had to suffer his break-up in public for the last several months.

To break the ice, Jon Stewart used ice cream, offering up some to Pattinson, saying: ?We?re just a couple of gals . . . tell me everything!?

?This is a program where I can feel awkward in every situation,? Pattinson replied. ?I?m trying to avoid eating!?

?Are you all right?? Stewart continued.

?I don?t know how to approach this. This is the weird thing about these interviews. I?m going to sound like an idiot,? Pattinson said. ?He then went on and told Jon Stewart, in confidence, that he has been dating Taylor Swift and he is very, very, happy.

?I?ve never been happier in my life,? a source told WWN.

Pattinson, 26, does not employ a publicist, so he has not been able to properly deal with his love life in public.

Taylor Swift, however, has recently been seen with Conor Kennedy ? a son of Patrick Kennedy. But things were not going well for the couple:

Robert is about the same height as Conor so Taylor feels ?comfortable? with him, according to sources close to Swift.

?They?re the perfect couple,? said a top Hollywood insider. ??They are both nice, genuine and extremely talented. ?And they don?t really buy into the whole Hollywood hype thing. ?They?re perfect together.?

Kristen Stewart learned about Swift taking the man she cheated on and is reportedly ?devastated? by the news.

Meanwhile, Swift has been dedicating her hit ?You Belong With Me? to Pattinson at all her concerts:

There are rumors that Swift and Pattinson planned to get engaged in the coming weeks and plan an early 2013 wedding.
